Thousands of international students' scholarship contracts to be tightened after ELTE scandal

International Students' Scholarship Contracts to be Tightened

Following the recent scandal at ELTE, thousands of international students in Hungary may face tightened scholarship contracts.

A lecture by Alexander Yakobson, a historian from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was disrupted on 16 October, prompting two ministers and the university rector to demand accountability.

The historian’s lecture series was titled “Diverzitás és demokrácia az izraeli társadalomban”

The incident began when students wearing keffiyehs shouted that the lecture was political propaganda supporting Israeli genocide, forcing the lecture to be halted.

The university's security failed to restore order, resulting in the suspension of the lecture and only two of the three sessions being attended online.

Author's summary: ELTE scandal affects international students.
