Solar recycling: Driving down costs before volumes spike

Solar Recycling: Driving Down Costs

The number of retired solar panels may reach 10 million per year before 2030, exceeding IEA estimates. Delaying the development of recycling infrastructure until the industry reaches a scale of "millions of panels per year" could lead to catastrophic costs for asset owners.

According to the latest report from the International Energy Agency, the challenge and opportunity of creating a circular economy for solar energy is growing rapidly. In the U.S., approximately 4-5 million panels per year are reaching the end of their life annually, and this number is expected to increase to tens of millions domestically and hundreds of millions globally by 2040.

The problem is growing fast, and the U.S. will likely hit the inflection point sooner rather than later.

Author's summary: Solar recycling costs must be driven down before volumes spike.
