Kidney Disease in Cats

Kidney disease is a serious and common health problem for cats, and is one of the leading causes of death in felines.

According to Charlie Powell, kidney disease occurs in two general ways: either acutely or as a chronic disease, both of which require immediate veterinary attention.

The kidneys play a vital role in filtering the body's fluids, eliminating toxins, conserving water balance, and regulating the balance of electrolytes, minerals, and proteins. Additionally, they regulate certain hormones and blood pressure.

Humans are luckier than most cats. If we develop kidney disease that leads to kidney failure, we can be put on dialysis, or we may be able to receive a kidney transplant.

In contrast, kidney transplants in cats are rare, expensive, and require a lifetime of comprehensive care and medication concerns, despite being possible since the 1980s.

Author's summary: Kidney disease is a serious health issue for cats.
