Martha Layne Collins, Kentucky's first and only woman governor, who passed away at 88, was a unique figure in politics. As a reporter covering her for over 40 years, she was the most reticent politician I encountered.
Always guarded, rarely forthcoming, she was more ice than fire during her long tenure in the public eye.
This trait, while not typical of successful politicians, did not hinder her from winning elections or leading a successful administration from 1983 to 1987. Collins will be remembered in history for bringing Toyota to Kentucky.
Her restrained nature, rarely showcasing humor or traditional Kentucky politician charm, set her apart. Despite this, she achieved significant accomplishments during her time in office.
Author's summary: Martha Layne Collins, a pioneering female governor, left a lasting legacy in Kentucky.
