The Ex-Communist Bear Baiter of Saskatchewan
Valentin Popov, owner of Tower Lodge Outfitters, is a unique individual who shuns the role of a typical host, instead working like a highly motivated guide.
Upon introduction, Popov declined a handshake, as he was preoccupied with reattaching a severed finger tip that he had accidentally cut off with a machete while trimming birch branches above a bear bait.
Over the course of a week, while clearing trails, navigating a 4-wheeler through the bogs of northern Saskatchewan, and hunting black bears, Popov would occasionally tend to his injured finger in an unorthodox manner.
“Keeps it clean,”
he would say, when urinating on the wound and rewrapping it with black electrical tape, prompting raised eyebrows at this unusual antiseptic method.
