Netflix has released the opening five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5, taking viewers back to the night Will Byers disappeared in 1983 and his initial connection to the Upside Down.
The first moments of the final season revisit the story's origin. The episode, titled “The Crawl,” is set on November 12, 1983, six days after Will vanished, showing him alone in the Upside Down’s eerie Castle Byers.
Portrayed by a young Noah Schnapp, Will is depicted as a 12-year-old boy, visibly frightened and exhausted. He quietly sings Should I Stay or Should I Go, a song first introduced by his brother Jonathan in Season 1, which has remained emotionally significant for him throughout the series.
"Should I Stay or Should I Go" has served as emotional grounding for him throughout the series.
Will hears strange sounds near his fort and grabs a hunting rifle, recalling earlier episodes. As he attempts to defend himself, he climbs a tree, but a creature drags him down to Vecna’s lair.
Instead of continuing directly from the Season 4 finale, the new season begins inside the Upside Down's silent and haunting environment, deepening Will’s connection to this otherworldly space.
This opening sets a tone of suspense and nostalgia, reconnecting fans with the series' origins and Will’s traumatic experience in the Upside Down.
