UN Secretary General Calls for Roadmap to Stabilize Libya
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has confirmed that Libya continues to face complex challenges threatening its political and security stability, over 14 years after the establishment of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
Guterres noted that UNSMIL has played a crucial role in managing political crises, facilitating electoral processes, and reducing local violence. However, he highlighted that ongoing divisions, multiple power centers, and the presence of heavy weapons across regions continue to undermine the country's unity and institutional integrity.
The absence of a comprehensive political settlement would leave Libya vulnerable to further division and security tensions.
Guterres called for accelerated steps towards unifying institutions and implementing a national roadmap based on free and transparent elections and inclusive national dialogue, including national elections.
