UAS Scientists Unveil New Data on Juneau's Glacial Outburst Flood

Researchers presented preliminary data on the role of ice dynamics in this summer's record-breaking flood in Juneau's Mendenhall Valley.

The Mendenhall Glacier is melting in ways that impact the size of glacial outburst floods. Scientists from the University of Alaska Southeast shared their findings at a lecture hall in Egan Library.

"It was a fast release — the fastest release we've seen in terms of just the rate at which the amount of water in the river was increasing hour over hour,"

said Eran Hood, an environmental scientist at the University of Alaska Southeast.

The Juneau glacial outburst flood in August broke multiple records, with the Mendenhall River rising quicker than ever before.
