Roman Wells Unearthed in Hungary

Archaeologists in western Hungary have discovered Roman-era wells, potentially part of the ancient settlement of Maestriana.

A team from Göcseji Museum conducted the excavation ahead of a construction project. The settlement was occupied between the 1st and 4th centuries A.D.

Our most important find consists of three Roman wells from the second century, all located within a single excavation unit.

According to archaeologist Lívia Simmer, the internal wooden framework of two wells has survived. Pottery likely imported from Gaul and other objects were recovered, indicating Maestriana's trade networks.
