Six US companies will spend at least $350 million to manufacture medical gowns for the Strategic National Stockpile.
This move comes years after doctors and nurses faced shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The purchase of the gowns is one of the final steps toward shoring up the personal protective equipment in the stockpile.
According to assistant secretary Dawn O’Connell, the new gowns are part of the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response's efforts to restock the emergency coffers.
The stockpile was depleted just weeks into the pandemic due to lack of restocking in previous years.
