Hurricane Melissa, currently a Category 3 storm, is expected to continue strengthening into a Category 5 storm.
The hurricane is moving northwest with sustained winds of 75 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, Melissa is anticipated to intensify over the weekend, reaching winds of up to 160 mph before making landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday morning.
Low wind shear and warm ocean temperatures are creating an environment conducive to rapid intensification over the next 24 hours.
As of ET Saturday, the National Hurricane Center reported Melissa was approximately 125 miles off the coast of Kingston, moving west at 3 mph with sustained winds of 115 mph.
Hurricane Melissa is expected to hit the Caribbean with heavy rain, life-threatening flash flooding and destructive winds.
