Apple's 20th anniversary iPhone may take a radical step away from physical controls, according to a claim from Chinese leaker "Instant Digital."
Expected to launch in 2027, the "iPhone XX" could replace mechanical buttons with solid-state haptic alternatives, including the Side button, volume buttons, Action button, and Camera Control.
The leaker states that Apple has completed functional verification on this design, which would feature buttons with no physical movement when pressed, using sophisticated haptics to create the illusion of a real click.
This isn't Apple's first attempt at the technology, as "Project Bongo" previously aimed to bring solid-state buttons to the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023 and the iPhone 16 Pro, but was shelved both times.
No comment from Apple.
