Shutdown won’t slow down cleanup at old J.H. Baxter site in Eugene

Shutdown Won't Halt Cleanup at J.H. Baxter Site

The federal government shutdown will not slow down cleanup operations at the former J.H. Baxter wood treatment plant in Eugene.

The plant, which closed in 2022 after nearly 80 years of operation, has been the subject of complaints regarding noxious odors and elevated dioxin levels in nearby yards and gardens.

The EPA designated the plant a Superfund site in July, which will mean years of continued removal of heavy contaminants from the site area.

According to Alice Corcoran, an EPA Region 10 spokesperson, "Baxter is funded with fiscal year 2025 funds and activities will continue... Both the time critical removal action and the Superfund site work will still be worked on."

Author's summary: Cleanup continues at J.H. Baxter site despite shutdown.
