A genetic testing firm, SeaD Consulting, was partnered with the festival to ensure compliance with Alabama's new seafood labeling law.

The festival appointed Chandra Wright, the director of environmental and education outreach at The Lodge at Gulf State Park, to the newly created role of "chief shrimp investigator".

The testing revealed violations of the state labeling law, with foreign products being mislabeled as domestic.
