Emotional events can help solidify memories, according to recent findings. These findings may have future implications for students studying or trauma survivors recovering.
Emotional experiences can strengthen memories of more mundane moments that occur before or after the event. Scientists have long been puzzled by why people remember some everyday moments and not others.
A new study reveals that weak memories can attach themselves to more exciting ones. For example, brain and behavior expert Chenyang (Leo) Lin recalls a hike in New Hampshire, where he was amazed by the large trees and darting squirrels.
“That was very new to me,”
says Lin, who grew up in a coastal city in southern China. This hike is now a vivid memory for Lin, and surprisingly, he also remembers the familiar chickens he saw on his way to the hike.
Author's summary: Emotional events can solidify memories.
