The town of Holly Springs, once considered a "poverty pocket" in wealthy Wake County, is seeing significant investment. Companies like Genentech, Amgen, and FUJIFILM Biotechnologies are building large manufacturing plants, with investments totaling $700 million, $1.5 billion, and $3 billion respectively.
It seems like every day I hear of another large pharma company building a $2 billion plant down here
according to Norman "Ned" Sharpless, former acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. This growth is a significant change from the 1980s, when Sharpless started his medical career in the state.
