Two federal judges ruled that the Trump administration must continue to fund SNAP, the nation's biggest food aid program, during the government shutdown.
The rulings came before the U.S. Department of Agriculture was set to freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps.
The Trump administration stated it would cover half of the typical federal assistance for 42 million Americans, including 31,545 Nassau County households, or 43,404 individuals.
The administration said it could no longer sustain funding due to the shutdown.
This decision affects approximately one in eight members of the population who rely on federal assistance to purchase groceries.
